About the Power team

Power infrastructure, built by our own crews.

Benang builds and maintains power infrastructure across Western Australia, from greenfield installation through to ongoing network maintenance. We deliver for the asset owners and head contractors who keep the network running, and we do it with our own people and plant.

We sit on the Western Power Network Support Services (NSS) Panel, where we deliver cable laying, trenching, dry-vac excavation, directional drilling, and substation construction and maintenance. We are actively pursuing positions on more critical panels including ENCP, as Western Power's annual construction and maintenance program, currently exceeding six hundred million dollars per year, is forecast to grow beyond a billion dollars over the next decade.

Our Power team brings the discipline of an asset owner contractor, the ingenuity of a builder, and the cultural responsibility of an Aboriginal-owned business. We self-perform our work. That means our supervisors, our cable hands, our drillers and our jointers are Benang people, accountable to one chain of command and one safety culture.

What we deliver

Power capabilities

Our Power capability spans the full lifecycle of energy infrastructure, from initial service location and survey through to commissioning, handover and ongoing maintenance. Each service area is delivered by qualified Benang personnel using our own fleet, with no reliance on external sub-contracting for core works.

Cable laying

Efficient and safe installation of high and low voltage electrical cables using advanced equipment, across HDPE conduit, direct buried, catenary and underground configurations.

HV and LV cabling

HV and LV cable supply, pulling, jointing, terminating and testing, in conduit and direct buried, including feeders into critical sites such as St John of God Hospital.

Service locating

Accurate detection and mapping of underground utilities to prevent damages during construction, integrated with survey and soil testing.

Trenching

Application of modern trenching techniques to ensure optimal installation depth and alignment of utility conduits, including in congested brownfield environments.

Dry-vac excavation

Non-destructive excavation that safely exposes underground utilities and reduces the risk of strikes on existing infrastructure. We operate our own dry-vac trucks and crews.

Horizontal directional drilling

Minimally invasive trenchless installation of utilities under roads, rail corridors, environmentally sensitive areas and urban streetscapes. Our drilling team delivers HDPE and conduit installations from short shots to multi-kilometre runs.

Substation construction and maintenance

Comprehensive services from groundwork to electrical integration, including kiosk substations, indoor switchrooms, ring main units and HV switchgear, with a focus on reliability and efficiency.

Overhead removal and underground conversion

Pole and overhead conductor removal, conversion to underground reticulation, installation of new street light poles and uni-pillars, including night-shift outage management.

Testing and commissioning

Cable testing, jointing verification, overcurrent and fault setting commissioning, and full As Constructed documentation packs aligned to client and asset owner standards.

Decommissioning of existing assets

Safe isolation, removal and disposal of generator connections, redundant cabling, and obsolete electrical infrastructure, with reinstatement to original or improved condition.

Renewable power systems

Solar PV integration, battery and storage interfaces, and renewable system maintenance, supporting the energy transition for asset owners and resources clients.

Street lighting and public realm electrical

Supply and installation of street light poles, public lighting cabling, and uni-pillar configurations, integrated with civil reinstatement.

Our position on the Western Power Network Support Services Panel is the cornerstone of Benang's Power business. Since 2023, we have been delivering cable laying, service locating, trenching, dry-vac excavation, directional drilling, and substation construction and maintenance across the Perth metropolitan area. The program is executed by a peak workforce of fourteen Benang personnel with zero lost time injuries and zero environmental incidents, up to five per cent Aboriginal participation on this panel, and up to 15 per cent across our Power work.

The works span urban, suburban and sensitive environments. They demand close coordination with Western Power asset management teams, traffic management authorities, and the public. Our crews are experienced in delivering against asset owner standards, with a track record of right-first-time delivery, comprehensive As Constructed documentation, and minimal community disruption.

On Rottnest Island, Benang has delivered a series of critical electrical infrastructure upgrades for the Rottnest Island Authority. The headline works were the installation and commissioning of the Geordie Bay 1 MVA Kiosk Substation and the Longreach 1 MVA Kiosk Substation, including site preparation, civil works, foundations, HV and LV cabling, earthing, and the establishment of temporary power supplies during cutover.

Western Australia's energy market sits at an inflection point. Western Power's annual construction and maintenance program is forecast to grow from over six hundred million dollars per year to beyond a billion dollars over the next decade, driven by aging infrastructure, surging demand, and the transition to renewable generation, storage and decarbonised resources operations.

Benang's Power team is positioning to lead through that transition. We are expanding our technical electrical capability into automation, dewatering pumps, advanced HV jointing, electrical maintenance, commissioning, and design. We are investing in proven and emerging technologies including dry vacuum excavation, topical drone survey, robotic excavation, and remote operations. And we are growing our cadet and apprentice pipeline so that the workforce powering Western Australia's energy future reflects the Country it stands on.
