Challenge
Replacing gas mains and services in congested, service-dense metro verges means working close to other live utilities, keeping customers on supply, and minimising disruption to traffic and residents across a five-year program.
Approach
Benang self-performs every stage. The crews open trench, backfill, and compact in tight metro corridors, lay HDPE mains across all sizes with in-house electrofusion and butt welding, and flow-stop and commission internally. Live mains insertions reduce excavation footprint and customer disruption. The team installed 160mm coil by horizontal directional drilling at Leach Highway and North Lake Road using its own rig and coil trailer, cutting traffic management cost and resident impact, then reinstated concrete, asphalt, and verges in house.
Outcome
Across Benang's ATCO programs the crews have completed more than 5,000 live insertions, more than 3,500 concrete reinstatements, and 265 tonnes of asphalt reinstatement. Project Moorditj runs from May 2025 to May 2028.
