Kojonup to Katanning pipeline

Benang is building two DN300 mild steel cement lined water mains for Water Corporation between Kojonup and Katanning, totalling 2,300 metres. The work includes trenchless road crossings under Main Roads highways, new connections, scour valves, pressure testing, and full site reinstatement.

  • Challenge

Two regional water mains had to cross live Main Roads highways without closing them. Open trenching across the Kojonup-Katanning Road and the Great Southern Highway was not an option, so the crossings had to go underground while traffic kept moving.

  • Approach

Benang self-performed the full pipeline build, installing 2,300 metres of DN300 mild steel cement lined main. At each highway the crew installed DN600 reinforced concrete sleeves by trenchless method, then pulled the carrier main through. New connections, scour valves, and chamber reinstatement were completed in sequence, followed by pressure testing and disinfection to Water Corporation standards.

  • Outcome

The pipeline was delivered with zero lost time injuries and zero environmental incidents, with Aboriginal participation up to 15 per cent. Both highway crossings went in without a single lane closure.
